Sprint "Power To Play" mini-camp2319 viewsNEVILLE ISLAND, Pa. March 17, 2007 -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hosted a minicamp for youngsters on Saturday at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center.
Thirty-three children won an essay contest on the benefits of hard work to get the chance to meet Big Ben, and even catch some passes from the Steelers star quarterback.
They also took part in sprints and a football field obstacle course.
Big Ben told Channel 11, "It's an opportunity to come out here and share some knowledge, some wisdom and some fun with these kids and share the game of football."
Roethlisberger also talked a little bit about the coaching change this year.
He didn't say much about Coach Bill Cowher's departure. But he is getting acquainted with new head coach Mike Tomlin.
Ben said, "Yeah, I've talked to him many times. I've been working out in there and had dinner with him and so we've been able to it down and talk about a lot of things."
This offseason has been pretty relaxed for Big Ben.
He followed his alma-mater, Miami of Ohio, during the team's run in the NCAA Tournament. Miami lost to Oregon by two points in the first round.
About his offseason, he also told Channel 11, "I've done a lot of traveling, golfing, watched my sister play basketball. A little bit of appearances like this with Sprint and football camps."
Roethlisberger now says his focus is on the upcoming season.

June 10, 2013 - Big Ben receives National Champion of Youth Award2194 viewsFor the past four years, the organization said hundreds of inner-city children had a dream come true when they found themselves on a football field with “Big Ben.”
Ben financed the cost of mini-camp experiences and took time to make each child feel special.
”For many of the children in attendance from the Boys & Girls Club, this became their only summer vacation, and Ben provided them with memories that will last a lifetime” said Mike Hepler, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.
Hepler said the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western PA wants to focus on the impact Ben has had on young people in the community.
